The XLIF (eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion) is an approach to spinal fusion in which Dr. Waguespack accesses the intervertebral disc space and fuses the lumbar spine (low back) using a  minimally invasive laser surgical approach from the side (lateral), rather than from the front (anterior) or the back (posterior).

The XLIF is one of a number of spinal fusion techniques that Dr. Waguespack may recommend in order to achieve the best possible outcome in treating certain lumbar spine disorders, such as lumbar degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis and deformity, recurrent lumbar disc herniation, and certain types of lumbar stenosis.

The XLif is a minimally invasive procedure with multiple uses and advantages including less soft tissue disruption and faster recovery than traditional surgery.

Dr. Waguespack is a member of the Society of Lateral Access Surgeons and has more experience with the XLif procedure than any other surgeon in the Gulf South region.
